Mahadeo Chimanaji Apte, a leading Advocate in the Bombay High Court founded this Institute in Pune, India in 1888 and bequeathed all his property to it. The Institute, housed within a massive quadrangle is 125 years old. The Institute, known to scholars of Sanskrit and Indology all over the world as a Publishing House, is making available to Sanskrit students and scholars its valuable and voluminous works at an affordable rate. Since its beginning, the Institute has published 144 books in 195 volumes spanning over 61,000 printed pages. The means of printing were limited to hand composition and the letter press until a few decades ago when systems were upgraded to include the photo offset technique for reprints.
